 Teclast T50

Introduction:
the new Teclast T50 is a step further into the “touch-screen PMPs”. This player use the same touch-screen technology as the iPod Touch, but the T50 is a lot more affordable. the T50 use the Rockchip RK2706 main chip and the great sound quality of the Wolfson WM8987 audio chip.

Design:
The design is simple, square-ish with rounded edges, black front with a metallic silver back. It’s a very small player that can fit in a pocket very well.

Screen:
The Teclast T50 have a 2.8 inches TFT LCD screen, 432×240, Widescreen (16:9), able to display 262k colors. Very unusual resolution for a player, but still work fine. This screen is also called “multi-touch” by some websites, i would call it more “dynamic touch-screen” since there’s animations, making it more lively.

User Interface:
The’s not much of the physical interface, since almost all operations are on the touch-screen. The only buttons visible are the front button (which have a red LED in it) and the power on/off button (which have a screen-lock option too!). Then there’s the microphone hole, the reset button hole, the USB port, and a place where you can put a strap (Teclast strap included in the box). A warning about the USB port, be careful, it’s not a standard one, so if you break the USB cable included in the player box, or you can’t find it anymore, there’s no replacement cable available for it…

The GUI:
The T50’s GUI is very easy to go around, and also dynamic. when you want to play a movie or a song, there’s a list appearing, you can just scroll up or down by putting your finger on the screen and going up or down with it to drag. When you’re in a sub-menu (music, radio, video, photo…) you can just press the front (red) button to go back (sometimes the “back arrow” doesn’t go back but shows different options in that sub-menu instead). You can also do a lot of customization, like changing the font size and colors, changing the background of the window, changing background of the different sub-menus. Be careful when you do with customization, for example if you put a very dark background of black fonts, it will be hard to navigate around. At least there’s a restore option in the player in case you messed it up accidentally.

Audio:
The player is compatible with MP3 (VBR or CBR), APE, WMA, AAC and FLAC files. It have a ton of equalizer options you can choose, including the Microsoft PlayFX (called “MSEQ” in the menu). It does support .lrc files too. The sound is really good, even without using equalizer, since it use a Wolfson sound chip (some iPod models used it), i was impressed how good the song “Don’t phunk with my heart” (by Black Eyed Peas) sounded on it, compared to other single-chip players.

Video:
The T50 supports, RM/RMVB, AVI and FLV (Flash Video) video files. The player support files with a video bitrate up to around 1000kbps , excellent for a PMP! I even tried a video of 1250kbps on the player (high resolution AVI, with Xvid video codec) and it only lagged (video-wise only, not sound wise) during scenes  with a lot of movements, the sound didn’t lagged though. But it’s always recommended to convert it to be sure it won’t lag. ViDrop is a very good video converter (a link can be found on AllPMP forum to download it).

Photos:

This player is compatible with JPEGs, GIFs (animated or not), and BMPs, it can handle almost any pictures size (i tried it with a 2592×1944 picture and it doesn’t work…but who’s going to watch pictures that size on a small player?), you can do rotations on them as well, and also, using the touch-screen, you can use 2 fingers to zoom in or out of the picture, and using a finger to pan around that zoomed picture. You can also use pictures as backgrounds in it.

Other Features:

-FM Radio

Radio reception is really good with this player. The Radio feature support pre-programmed stations, which are easy to create bookmarks (up to 30), using the auto-search option. It also support 4 regions (China, Europe, USA, Japan). You can also record the FM radio station you’re listening to.

-Voice Recording
You can record your voice with the built-in microphone on the side, the recording quality is good enough to record anything around you (simply said, it “do the job”, with Low and High recording quality, same thing in the FM recording.

-Text Viewing (E-book)
The player support TXT files. The Teclast T50 also feature a TTS (Text-To-Speech), meaning the player use a built-in vocoder to actually say the words from the text file. This feature was built for Chinese-speaking persons, so it might sound strange to make it say english words.

Accessories included:
Accessories inside the box of the player: white cleaning cloth, USB cable (don’t break or lose it!), Teclast leather strap, manual, standard headphones, black carrying case.

Conclusion:
The Teclast T50 is a slim player for those who want to carry it in their pocket easily, while being able to navigate around easily, and being customized easily with pictures, fonts size and colors. I would recommend a screen protector on it, as the screen tend to get fingerprints and making them obvious, a screen protector will make it more resistant to that, and dust. This player have a pretty good screen in the “touch-sensitive TFT LCD screens” category. A good choice if you’re listening to a lot of musics, and also videos look and sound great on it!
